Amy and the Little White Butterfly is a children’s picture book by Alysia Mercer. It tells the story of Amy, an independent little girl who initially has a very normal life. Tragedy strikes when Amy’s mother becomes sick, goes into hospital and then goes ‘to Heaven in her sleep’. From this point of the story, Amy is visited by a little white butterfly whom she realises is the spirit of her mother trying to comfort her from heaven. The book explains Amy’s conflicting emotions about missing her mother and accepting her loss, whilst also enjoying the company of the butterfly and remembering all the nice things she used to do when her mother was still around.
Amy and the Little White Butterfly tackles the subject of parental loss very well, with pleasant illustrations and easy to understand sentences. The topic is dealt with in a sensitive way and given a very positive outlook whilst still acknowledging the child’s right to feel sad about loss. Author/illustrator Alysia Mercer presents a professional-looking book with engaging, bright illustrations to help aid understanding, whilst also showing the beauty of the natural world and the friendship and love between the characters. I particularly found Waggy the dog to be funny and delightful. Overall, I feel that the author has done a great job in tackling such a difficult subject for this age range of young readers and I believe that this book could definitely be used to help youngsters who are going through the same thing.
