China is one of the super economies of not only the Far but also the Middle East while the rest of the world is constantly on its toes to establish its political and economic influence in the world. China’s Belt and Road initiative is one of the many strategies China has implemented to achieve its goals. This then puts the question: is China’s recent interest in Puerto Rico politically motivated? Taking a keen look at Puerto Rico’s political status, we see the Caribbean island has maintained a complicated relationship with China’s biggest rival, the United States of America. Puerto Rico is still a US territory, making it perhaps the only Caribbean island that has failed to attain its full independence. Why is the island still under the ownership of the US? Why would China be interested in a US territory? Get yourself Alexander Odishelidze’s America’s Last Fortress to learn more.

Enthusiasts of nonfiction political books will love America’s Last Fortress. I loved Alexander Odishelidze’s style of writing. He uses complex structured sentences that embody a pleasant combination of “down to business” and a casual tone. He accompanies this with an appropriate and sophisticated vocabulary. He propounds his ideas and insights in a very engaging way. I loved how candid he is about various political aspects and views. In fact, he backs up most of his ideas with historical and statistical data rather than using biased ideas and opinions. America’s Last Fortress gave me a front seat in Puerto Rico’s political arena, filling me in on the role it plays and would play both politically and economically to the United States and China, and insight on Puerto Rico’s political future.
