American Women During World War II by Claudia Hagen is an excellent depiction of the war and the role that women played in it, both at home and overseas. It recounts various aspects of the war, starting before the war begins and giving a historical backdrop to the entire situation, and then launching into women's roles in all of the big events that most people know. In general, everyone knows about events like Pearl Harbor, but not everyone knows what role women played in it. More importantly, for the war in general, the addition of women in non-combat yet instrumental roles freed up more men to fight on the front lines. This book puts forward the idea that women were a key factor in every major piece of history in this great war, from handling affairs at home to serving overseas.
This book sprinkles in a lot of pictures from the time period that bring home the reality of the situation and the factors that were at play. Women were discriminated against whilst simultaneously serving in vital positions, because women were told they were incapable of doing the jobs even while they were doing them. I found the images to be well-chosen and illustrative to the stories being conveyed, and the people highlighted throughout the work contributed greatly to a good historical understanding of the time period. I believe that anyone who is interested in the history of the war needs to study things like this as well, because they don't get as much attention as the war itself. American Women During World War II by Claudia Hagen gives us a look at the women who served during World War II alongside their male counterparts, and shows that everyone was forced to sacrifice, not just the soldiers, during this war. All in all, an excellent work.
