Amelia (A Somnium Chronicles Short Story) by M. Blake Adams is a short story that gives you a peek into a single night in a young man's life. Gabriel is part owner of a used bookstore. Zachariah is his friend and his co-owner in the bookstore. People from the small town of Somnium come to their store because of the good service that the two provide, and the conviviality of the owners. Tonight, Gabriel is going on a date and is very nervous. He has a tendency to overcompensate and drive girls away. He really likes this girl and he doesn't want to mess up. His friends, Zachariah and Agustin, descend upon him to give him advice and a hard time. Even Liz, another one of his friends, comes to rescue him and helps him pick out something right to wear, not something that makes him look old. After all of their aggravation and help, he leaves and meets Amelia. Will he blow it?
Amelia (A Somnium Chronicles Short Story) by M. Blake Adams is an interesting view into one night of Gabriel's life. We watch Gabriel sweat through his first date with Amelia. He perceives himself as too intense and believes his intensity is what drives the girls away. He doesn't want to make the same mistake with Amelia. Will he be able to break his self-destructive patterns? This story is an introspective look into Gabriel's psyche and helps build his character in the Somnium Chronicles. This is an interesting glimpse of first date jitters. The story brought back the memories and angst of dating.
