Alpha Bette by Jennifer Manocherian centers around Bette Gartner, a feisty and headstrong widow of ninety-five who, after having lost her beloved George due to a fatal disease nearly six years ago, has been waiting for a sign from him. After all, they did make a promise that whoever died first would reach out from beyond the grave. But waiting and feeling so close to death herself leaves Bette depressed and morose. One morning, a strange but welcoming incident occurs, encouraging Bette to take matters into her own hands - a decision that not only affects her but everyone she loves. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy but Bette knows what's best for them and has a few things to say, whether they like it or not.
A deeply moving family drama about love, regret, and hope, Alpha Bette reminds you of your family ties and the choices you might have made that not only changed your life but those of your loved ones. This tale had my attention from the beginning. The warmth with which Jennifer Manocherian tells the story is amazing. It had me experiencing a feeling of coziness throughout. I loved the characters, especially Rosie and Venera. Each had a backstory that helped make the novel come alive. Jennifer also made it easy to empathize with the role players, even the dreaded and never-married Miss Sidenstriker. I recommend this inspirational drama to everyone who loves their family and the company of little old ladies who are impossibly stubborn.
