Almost by Amy Booker is the first book in the New Adult romance series, Near Miss. The book is narrated in the first person and dances between its main characters. It is set in a small town in Ohio where everyone knows everyone else and very little happens, at least up until Ryan Crawford goes to California and makes himself famous. When he returns to record his next new body of work, he inadvertently takes something away from his childhood friend, Sarah Lawrence. Sarah had dreams of her own in the music industry that ended abruptly when tragedy struck. Still in the throes of an unthinkable loss and responsibilities nobody her age should have to carry, Ryan's return brings up old baggage and a whole host of new misunderstandings.
Almost by Amy Booker is a delicious weekend snack with all the right ingredients. We have youthful love and a seriously hot rocker with a seriously soft spot for the girl he always thought would be more than a friend. We also have the aforementioned girl, now a young woman, who has been forced to be strong and is really freaking tired. She is also sensitive and prone to wearing her emotions on her sleeve, which makes her susceptible to heartache. Lots and lots and lots of it. That said, some of it is justified, like when an “it's not what it looks like” incident occurs. Apparently what happens in Vegas goes back to Ohio, whether you like it or not. This is a tightly written story, well-paced with excellent character development and is laden with f-bombs, which means I would give it a whole bucket of stars if I could. Very highly recommended.
