Sheela Word spins a tale of living without modern technology in her book All You Need. Luisa Morales is taking her daughter to Oregon to stay with her father, Dirk Farone, for the summer. While Teresa “Terry” Morales spends time on the farm, Luisa will be tending to her father, who is fatally ill. Terry hopes to build a connection with her father. The farm appears to be a small community of people living under one roof. The members of the group prefer a natural life with everyone contributing to the daily work. Terry enjoys her new experiences and can't wait to tell her friends in the city. Dirk loses interest in spending time with his daughter. Slowly, multiple people begin leaving the farm, seeking opportunities elsewhere. Terry spends the summer playing and helping with the various chores on the farm. As the summer ends, Terry has a visitor show up on the farm.
All You Need really draws you into the characters. I disliked Dirk for being an absentee parent and I empathized with Terry’s intense need for her father’s approval, and the pride she took in everything she accomplished. Sheela Word’s relatable descriptions of the various people on the farm made the story come alive. The pace made it easy to read and I was able to stay interested through every new detail. Terry's ability to emotionally grow throughout the story would be a great example for young teens. I would recommend All You Need by Sheela Word to young adults who enjoy stories of how people adapt to off-the-grid living.
