All Sugar Ain't Sweet by Candace Habte is a collection of short stories exploring various aspects of life. The first story, “Built to Last,” focuses on family and how hard work and friendship can overcome prejudices. “Sweet Buttered Rolls” is a more tragic tale about a woman who has lost a child, but must care for those belonging to another in order to put food on the table. “Love, Diamond” is a chronicle of letters to a lost love. “God Bless the Child” is a sweet and simple story about a girl coming to terms with the death of her mother. Finally, “The Night We Fell” is an abstract-style story about relationships and leaning on each other in times of need. There is also a bonus story, entitled “Daddy’s Girl,” about the special relationship between a father and daughter.
Miss Habte weaves together beautifully written stories showing the harsher sides of life. I particularly felt touched by “Sweet Buttered Rolls.” The unsympathetic nature of the woman’s employer is something that still rings true in our modern world. My heart broke for her, having to help someone else with their children while her own did not survive. I also enjoyed “Love, Diamond.” The letters showed a unique way someone copes with the loss of someone they loved dearly. I wish the stories had been much longer. The plot lines showed potential and several could have been formatted into novels, particularly, “Love, Diamond.” All Sugar Ain't Sweet is a quick read with a lasting impact.
