Traveling to China? Want to learn some Chinese words? AIEEYAAA! Learn Chinese The Hard Way: The English-Chinese Cartoon Dictionary by Larry Feign is not the usual Chinese dictionary, but is more fun and comical and will teach readers how to converse in Chinese. Learning Chinese is not easy and if you have seen countless textbooks, audio/video lessons, and websites claiming it is easy, then you are in for a disappointment. This satirical dictionary pulls readers in with its topical cartoons about life in China, and is a collection of linguistic snapshots of China and Hong Kong. The book has Mandarin and Cantonese translations for every word, traditional and simplified Chinese characters, cartoon scenarios that will help readers remember every word, humorous tips about cross-cultural miscommunication, and an extended introduction which tells the truth about the trials and tribulations of learning Chinese.
I found the book engaging and interesting and the author’s approach to the subject is commendable. The author makes learning Chinese fun with the illustrations that will put a smile on the faces of readers. It is an excellent buy for all those looking to learn Chinese or teach Chinese to children and adults. It is a book that anyone who is trying to learn Chinese would enjoy because of the way it is presented. It is not a book that will make readers bored. Instead, with all the comical illustrations and humor, it will help readers understand the cultural context of the words in a smart way. It is definitely an excellent book for Chinese language learners.
