Chris Slaughter has masterfully shared his heartbreak and triumph in Abide in Me. Imagine having a wife, a daughter, and a son living in an average family. Then disaster comes to visit. Chris’ daughter, Sam, was only six when she started her terrifying and gut-wrenching journey of medical crises. During this time, Chris went through personal struggles as a loving father who watched his daughter suffer. None of the family knew if Sam would live or die. Chris was not only suffering emotionally, but he was also fighting spiritual pain. How could a loving Father allow His daughter to suffer so severely when He could stop the pain? So often, sickness turns into a spiritual crisis. Chris shares the physical, emotional, and spiritual struggles with the reader. This book shares the deep struggles of families with desperately ill children. Read this book to be informed and inspired.
Chris Slaughter shares from his heart in Abide in Me, and the reader can feel his pain. Those who have gone through the dark night of not knowing if their child will die from a strange disease can testify that sharing our story is not easy. Chris has done a fantastic job of sharing his pain and attaching the spiritual growth that pain teaches. He does not preach but opens his heart, allowing the reader into the dark recesses that often we don’t share. After all, we want everyone to think we are OK because we are spiritual. Chris pulls back the curtain and invites the reader into the inner working of faith during times of duress. This book is a must-read for anyone who desires to help a family with chronic illness, terminal illness, or a differently-abled member.
