Abaddon by Rovshan Abdullaoglu tells the tale of a highly respected Dublin Investigator, Sean O’Neil, who has just arrived in the historic town of Cobh, Cork. O’Neil has been assigned to catch a serial killer whose trademark of horrifying torture and mutilation before death leaves no clues to their identity. Helping O’Neil in his search for the killer is a talented criminal psychologist, Erin Parker, who is equally emotionally scarred, and determined to stop the killer before he strikes again. As the investigation deepens and yet another victim is found, O’Neil wonders whether the killer is connected to Satanism or just a psychopath on the rampage who seems to revel in sadistic murder. Is the killer trying to resurrect a dark soul, and is there a connection to the murder victims? Whoever the killer is, they seem to strike every month, so O’Neil and Erin have to act fast before they choose their next victim.

The storyline of Abaddon by Rovshan Abdullaoglu is gripping and will grab your attention from the first chapter. I loved the detailed backstories of Abaddon, O’Neil, and Erin, as they gave a fantastic insight into their thoughts, behaviors, and actions towards others. I thought O'Neil and Erin's relationship developed perfectly. I loved how they both tried to make sense of their feelings for one another, and gradually their emotional barriers were broken down. The author wrote the graphic murder scenes exceptionally well. The descriptive narrative was terrific and transported the reader into the dark and terrifying world of the victims and investigators. The historical references to the Sirus steamship and the Titanic added a significant layer of interest to the plot. The sub-plot involving Abaddon, Dorit, and Ray was intriguing and intelligent, and I admired how Rovshan brought both storylines together so effortlessly. The plot twists were unique, and the ending was perfect. Abaddon is a brilliant and unforgettable read.
