A Wretched Little Book of Poems is a work of collected narrative poetry across a variety of characters and subjects and was penned by author Allen Isom. The poems all share the same styling and take the form of gruesomely enjoyable horror mini-fables written for those who enjoy dark and scary moments. The work is also fully illustrated to accompany each of the tales, which tend to share a sharp moral message within their hair-raising verses. From traditional monsters and beasts through to the unnerving town where everyone smiles too much, and the emotional resonant feelings of despair and giving up, there’s a horror to tingle everyone’s spine within these pages.
Author Allen Isom has crafted a truly unique volume of poetic works that teen readers and upwards will be sure to devour. One of the things which really surprised me about the volume was how deep it became in places as we travel from playful narrative tales with gruesome images into suddenly poignant moments regarding despair, depression, and pressure in the modern world. The rhythm and rhyme keep the light tone juxtaposed with the dark themes to give it that creepy edge, and the illustrations really achieved the same morbid whimsy as a perfect accompaniment. ‘Having A Ball’ was especially grim and, as with many works in the volume, the more I re-read them, the creepier they became! Overall, I’d say that anyone who enjoys a good slice of the morbid will find A Wretched Little Book of Poems completely irresistible, and rightfully so.
