A Thin Line Between Love and Hate: A Black Man's Journey Through Life and the CIA by Darryl A. Lansey is an unapologetic memoir that gives glimpses of the racism and inequality that played an important role in shaping the author's family's history, his worldview, and his journey through life and the CIA. The stories are based on true events that defined the author's journey and which played a role in many of the significant accomplishments that gave him joy as well as his sorrows and disappointments. He also speaks of his love affair with the CIA and the extent he went to in keeping the United States safe from its enemies. The author's dislike of the racial designation of African American is palpable and his journey reveals his travels in the world collecting and analyzing information while working during the administrations of Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump.
The memoir is honest and Darryl A. Lansey also speaks about the mental and physical pain he had to endure, and the personal hurdles he faced due to racist views. His therapeutic experience while speaking about his life also gives reason as to why he has discussed his mental anguish and the biases he faced during his tenure. Many from his community will be able to relate as his experiences show the thin line that exists between love and hate in the United States. A Thin Line Between Love and Hate is well written and the author does not go overboard, yet at the same time, he gives readers glimpses of his views on race and religion and how those views were shaped.
