In A Shout in the Wind by Michael D. Davis, Sean Contess and Maria Simone get lost in the Peruvian jungle. These two college interns are alone in the jungle with a group of middle and elementary school children who have survived a plane crash in which the plane's crew, a few children and the adult chaperones have lost their lives. These kids belong to elite society and are used to living a comfortable life. Now they have to learn to survive in the harsh jungle and battle the usual dangers faced when in such an environment. They must overcome all the difficulties and obstacles that lie in front of them and find a way to survive and escape.
The theme is adventurous and the author has captured the dangers of the jungle and the interaction with the jungle inhabitants very well. The evolution of the children from their privileged background to meeting the demands of living in a jungle is remarkably developed as the story progresses. The surviving children staring at death when the plane crashes and the broken bodies of some of the dead children give the story a sadness that these spoiled children are not used to. But the story is not always about difficulties. It has its fun moments, too. The story shows how all of them stand by each other during times of trouble and help each other. An excellent story that is entertaining and one where the author has captured the essence of the Peruvian jungle very well.
