A Role to Kill For by H. Paul Doucette is a really good old fashioned mystery novel reminiscent of the Mickey Spillane era books. A Role to Kill For takes place in New York City in the early 1960s. Matt Murphy is an ex-policeman who now has his own private detective business. A beautiful young woman enters his office, asking for help in finding out who killed her brother, an aspiring actor. Matt takes the case and begins his investigation. Murphy works closely with his old friend Abe, who is still a policeman and working on the same case. There have recently been several young, handsome off-Broadway actors found murdered and Matt’s client's brother is one of them. The search takes him to the clubs of Greenwich Village where he uses an assortment of odd characters to help him track down the killer. Matt finds his life in danger as Mafia hit men try to stop him the closer he gets to finding the killer. He does whatever it takes to solve the crime and give his client and her family an answer to the senseless murder.
A Role to Kill For is a pure mystery/sleuth story without offensive bad language or unnecessary sex scenes. H. Paul Doucette has written a book worthy of high praise. A Role to Kill For kept me involved from the very beginning and never disappointed. I found myself cheering for Matt Murphy as though he was a personal friend. I anxiously look forward to and hope that Doucette plans on writing many more Matt Murphy, Private Investigator stories. This is a winner for everyone who enjoys a riveting mystery story with a good plot and great characters.
