A Prisoner Behind the Bars of Time by Zeina Jradi is the harrowing story of a woman fighting for the right to reunite with her son. Forced to marry at sixteen, Elham, a Lebanese teenager, found herself unwittingly leaving her home for a country in Africa to live with a man she neither knew nor loved. Her husband, Adnan, is not a kind man, and his abusive behavior only worsens after she gives birth to their son, Kamal. In an act of unfathomable cruelty, Adnan kicks Elham out of the house and refuses to let her see her son. Finding herself homeless in the streets, Elham somehow manages to find work as a maid and, eventually, starts working toward getting her son back with the help of a kind family. Will she ever reunite with her son?
With this heartbreaking story, author Zeina Jradi sheds light on the plight of women suffering domestic abuse and worse in conservative societies in the Middle East and Africa. Based on real-life events, A Prisoner Behind the Bars of Time is a captivating tale that showcases the lengths to which a mother will go to protect and care for her son. Jradi paces the plot nicely, drawing the reader in with a captivating start to the story that keeps its momentum until the end. Elham is a riveting protagonist. As a reader, you can't help but sympathize with her plight, and I found myself rooting for her to reunite with her family. Despite the sad tone, the story ends on a hopeful note. Recommended to readers of slice-of-life dramas who enjoy books that highlight relevant social issues.
