Caleb Beachy had spent five years in the Englisch world, away from his Amish family and faith. He decides to make an appearance on Christmas Eve night, surprising his entire family. But even though Caleb grew up Amish, finding his way back into the Amish community and lifestyle was not as easy as he thought it would be. First of all, Caleb’s dad didn’t make coming home easy for Caleb; in fact, to me he really acted like a jerk. He was the bishop, and he just couldn’t deal with what his son had done to the family. And then there was Josie Yoder, who grew into a beautiful woman in the five years Caleb was gone, but her father would never let her date someone who had experienced the world like Caleb had. So life was tough for Caleb, but he was determined to find his way back to his Amish roots.
As always, Mary Ellis writes a heart-warming Amish story that will capture your heart and stay with you for a while. Caleb was a good guy, but living up to his dad’s expectations were almost impossible. Thankfully, he had a sweet mom and sisters that were willing to forgive and forget about his past, and give him a chance. And Josie was surprisingly nice to him, too. My heart ached for Caleb as he beat himself up so much over his past life, and he had problems forgiving himself and moving on with his life. But this Amish community and church knew they needed to turn to God, forgive past sins and forget them, and welcome Caleb back. I enjoyed following Caleb, his family and Josie, and how they looked to the One that would make their life complete. And if you love Amish, A Plain Man by Mary Ellis is a must for you.
