A Place of Vengeance: Tales from Windward Cove is a paranormal novel by David Lafferty. Ben Wolf is a teenage psychic who can see into the past. When he begins his year at Silver Creek High School, new friends are made. Ben meets Gina Lynch, a very shy, new girl who is constantly shadowed by her rather scary cousin, Darren. Ben also befriends Kelly Thatcher, the former head cheerleader, and her friends from the cheerleading squad, leading Ben into Kelly's ex-boyfriend's cross-hairs. It is just another school year... until bodies start dropping at the school. When all the clues point Ben and his friends, Ab and Les, to Darren, they kidnap Darren to force him to confess to his part in the murders. But what they learn is more terrifying than they could have ever imagined. It seems that instead of going to the town sheriff, Ben, Ab, and Les would be better served befriending a nearby exorcist, and fast. One of the students is possessed by a murderous poltergeist, and with Ben's mother the next known target, he risks everything to protect her.
David Lafferty is an exceptional writer and as a fan of paranormal tales, I couldn't help but feel pulled into this extraordinary thriller. Initially, it was intriguing to see the world through Ben's eyes as he battled ghosts and hauntings. Teenagers being teenagers, and a new kid just trying to fit in took me back to my days of fandom of Enid Blyton. Everything seems rather tame until the novel grabs the reader by the throat and tame is replaced by utter terror. Although the switch from happy smiles to thrills happened fast, it took me by surprise but I knew I was in too deep to stop reading. Each murder was gut-wrenching and I could feel the emotional pain with one death in particular. A Place of Vengeance will have readers on the edge of their seats. I highly recommend David Lafferty's amazingly penned novel to all fans who are not too squeamish and love gripping paranormal thrillers. This is certainly one of the best I have ever read.
