A Perfect Patricide by Krzysztof Pacyński is an engaging thriller with memorable characters and an intriguing plot, the second part in a series. Senator Jefferson Dent is running for the office of the president as a Democratic candidate, but there is more to the battle than politics. He is a man who carries with him a difficult past, including memories of his years at war and his personal tragedies. Does he have what it takes to put his past behind and forge a new political career or will his personal demons stand in the way?
Krzysztof Pacyński shows unusual skills in character and plot development. The story is character-driven and readers will encounter characters like Jake and Dent and how their portraits come out through the engaging dialogues and the emotionally charged interactions. The author weaves the backstory into the plot in a very intelligent manner, allowing readers to follow the protagonist’s past woes and delve into his stressed frame of mind without losing touch with his present challenges, a style that helps to build the suspense and keep readers guessing what could happen next in the story.
The prose is excellent and it is, in itself, a delight to read. The setting comes out clearly and it seems that the author understands the political game very well, taking readers into the very heart of campaigns and unveiling the stress, the drama, and the behind-the-scenes moments they’d expect. There is so much to enjoy in this story, but what caught my attention was the depth of the psychological conflict, the masterful craft of storytelling, the phenomenal characters, and the quick pacing. A Perfect Patricide is a delight to read.
