"A Look at Christianity" by Frederic Colman surveys the religion, starting with a look at its beginnings in the Old Testament, through the life of Christ as chronicled in the New Testament, and into the Dark Ages, the Renaissance and modern times. The author provides an immense amount of historical, archaeological and scientific information that relates to the subjects and events covered in the Bible. He chronicles the trial of Galileo and the conflicts between church and science over the years and details the bloody and often scandalous history of Christianity. Colman's premise is that children are indoctrinated into religion through Biblical myths and legends, such as Noah's gathering of the animals into his ark, but as adults they do little to learn more about their faith. His work demonstrates the practical impossibility of many of the things the devout feel are true owing to their inclusion in the Bible.

Please ensure that you read this book, whether you are a devout believer, a lapsed Catholic or anywhere else in the faith spectrum. Colman is a wonderful writer and makes his subject easily accessible with his conversational style of writing. I found myself looking forward to having time to dig into "A Look at Christianity" and can honestly say I was captivated by the entire book. It is the kind of book that makes you want to read things out loud to whoever happens to be around and sometimes makes you very sad at the same time. As someone who got into serious trouble in a Catholic Primary school for questioning indulgences and asking what language Adam and Eve spoke, I thoroughly enjoyed the Old Testament part of the book. There is so much historical information packed in these pages that could be of value to believers and nonbelievers alike -- perhaps the more devout will be shocked or appalled or may even violently disagree with some of what lies within it, but I believe anyone reading this book will be enriched by the experience.

I am the first person to tell people I used to be Catholic and that I am now Pagan, but that does not mean the information and beliefs I grew up with just went away. I am always curious to take a look at different books on many different religions so when I got the chance to read and review A look at Christianity by Fredric Colman I was very excited. The book itself did not let me down at all.

A very well thought out and put together book, A look at Christianity takes a long hard look at the Christian faith. Focusing on old information as well as some fantastic new finds that indicate stories in the bible maybe indeed be mythology. The author is not trying to tell anyone of any faith that they are wrong. However, it does examines things from the point of view that Christian faith may be just as rooted in fable and story as those of the Pagans, Wiccan's or any other religion.

I would never tell anyone what to believe in, nor ridicule them for their religious beliefs, and this book doesn't do that either. Rather presents information in a very educational tone and allows you to make your own decision. I would recommend A look at Christianity to anybody who is not afraid to question their faith.

"A Look at Christianity" by Frederic Colman makes you question some of the impractical beliefs that have been taught to us from childhood. Through well-researched data backed with historical and archaeological finds, the author has presented his perspective in a fascinating way. Is the Bible really the Word of God or is it just another book written by humans? Is it truly the book to live by or just a rehash of all the old cultures and customs put together to make a convincing story about the Messiah and the Heavenly Father? Can religion really save us from the horrors of hell or are heaven and hell just a figment of someone's overactive imagination?

It is a look at Christianity from a different point of view. Frederic Colman has delved deep into history and facts to present his case strongly. Is Christianity actually a religion about love and forgiveness? Does God, the Heavenly Father, really exist? This book takes you on fact-finding journey that tries to explore the truth around the claims and stories in the various books of the Bible. The author methodically dismantles the stories and lays bare the facts as to why certain claims like Noah's Ark, the concept of Genesis, etc., may not be possible. Makes for an interesting read; especially the discussion on the evidence from the archaeological findings made me think really hard. Do we really know the truth about the religions we are born and raised into? Does a questioning and curious mind have enough space to keep belief on one side and explore the unknown without being afraid of disappointment?

Frederic Colman's "A Look at Christianity", with its 26 interesting chapters, veers away from the popular view of Christianity and religion in general. Using new scientific breakthroughs in the field of biology, astronomy and geology, the book asserts that most of the stories found in the Bible are fiction, and that religion originated when people started to believe in magic to understand what was going on in nature. Religion persisted in the early days because it helped in the survival of the family, the tribe and ultimately, the country. The book starts by debunking Bible stories like Genesis and Exodus. Tracing the history of Christianity until the Twentieth Century, it presents many convincing proofs that Christian beliefs are not what we always thought they were.

This book is probably not written to destroy Christianity but for people to investigate and know the real substance of their beliefs. For all of its scientific discussions, the book does not fail at being readable. It is clear that the author loves the topic and his style is animated and engaging. To make his point, he explains and shows the contrast between the stories in the Bible and scientific discoveries. He also traces the history of Christianity and at some parts of the discourse, he does sound wry and sometimes cynical, without actually being overly critical. I belong to a Christian family and I agree with many of the points raised by the author. In fact, I find "A Look at Christianity" to be an excellent and an enjoyable read. It is a good resource on learning more about Christianity in particular and religion in general. This book is an eye opener and is a must read for skeptics, religious people and atheists alike.
