A Little Vice in Paradise: Very Vero Book Two by Gretchen Rose is an intriguing drama. The main storyline features Andrea, a down-on-her-luck realtor, desperate to secure Daniel’s purchase of a home for his mystery client. Unfortunately, the only property he seems interested in is her family’s enclave. Moreover, it seems like Andrea and Daniel cannot help but mix business with pleasure. Rose intertwines various subplots throughout the novel involving a wide cast of characters that are acquainted with Andrea and Daniel. Andrea’s boss, Sarah, discovers that Floyd, their escrow accounts manager, has embezzled a significant amount of their funds and has gone on the run. On the other hand, Daniel’s soon-to-be ex-wife, Kara, takes a life-changing trip to their Barbados estate.
I enjoyed A Little Vice in Paradise by Gretchen Rose. Despite this being the second entry in a series, I did not feel lost, in not having read the first book. This work could be easily adapted into a prime-time telenovela with all its theatrical twists and turns. Gretchen Rose’s writing style is vivid and easy to follow, and all the dialogue is realistic. The interactions between the cast were organic and downright hilarious at times, such as the scenes where Kara and her friends discussed Bajan culture, which intrigued me as a Caribbean national. I especially enjoyed following Floyd’s misadventure as a fugitive from the law in my homeland, Dominican Republic. I recommend A Little Vice in Paradise to all lovers of urban drama.
