Sonya Annita Song’s A Little Nutty is a children’s picture book about a character named Peanut Butter who seems to live a pretty eventful life, getting himself into rather sticky situations, but never claiming to be the troublemaker himself. The narrative is told in enchanting poetic rhyme. The illustrations created by Mabel Chong are playful and vibrant, nearly bouncing off the pages. The characters are enticing and bring a lot into the story just by their expressions at times. The colors and images perfectly tie into the storyline of this page-turner.
A Little Nutty by Sonya Annita Song has a creative storyline and reminded me of my own childhood, specifically of Pee-Wee Herman’s Playhouse when he would open his refrigerator and the ingredients would come to life and have their own little short adventures. I found A Little Nutty to be incredibly charming and it made me wish that I had my own son or daughter to read it to at night before bedtime. Stories of inanimate objects coming to life aren’t always done well, but Song’s A Little Nutty is definitely one of those exceptions. It’s my personal belief that this is the perfect story to be read to your children or to be included in a teacher’s reading list at storytime for pre-school age children up to seven. I think that children will find it enjoyable and funny at times, and even the young at heart will enjoy the sweet ending, pun completely intended.
