A Journey of Words by Brian Paone, JM Ames, et al. invites the reader to explore another world of the unexplained and obscure in this second volume of short stories by a collection of talented authors. Discover if karma exists when a man’s family is killed, the love between a father and son as they take one final road trip, and why you must be careful what you plant in your garden. Will a dying man achieve the one thing on his bucket list as he sets off on Route 66? And how you must never accept a lift from strangers. Some stories will touch your heart and inspire you to treasure every moment with loved ones; others will exhilarate you and a few will give you goosebumps. You will be taken on a journey from strange islands to outer space in this enchanting book of superb short stories, but the endings will never be what you expect.
I have already read the third volume in this series and this book is just as well-written and captivating. Each of the authors has a clear talent to build suspense and intrigue into their plots; each tale had twists and turns throughout. Every character was believable, three-dimensional and memorable. I have been taken on a true emotional journey of heartbreak with Retribution, as a man faces the person who had caused the death of his wife and children, and Six Miles to Suring, when a mother has to choose the fate of her child. I loved the suspense in Creepers and the ending was the perfect definition of karma. My absolute favourite has to be An Unfortunate Lift; this was a chilling story that made me shudder and gripped my attention until the amazing ending. Another perfect example of how a short story should be written.
