A Hop By The Sea by Laurel Lorenzini, illustrated by Amanda Letcher, is an amazing picture book about otherness, friendship, and spending time together. The illustrations are beautiful, sweet, original, and lively. The themes are essential and the story is extremely moving. These are supported by exquisite and poetic text, which also rhymes. This sets the tone and makes us feel like reading the book out loud. A great idea for parents of small children. Fabulous story-telling! I am looking forward to reading other books by this great author.
A Hop By The Sea by Laurel Lorenzini is the story of a picnic for two becoming, little by little, a menagerie as more and more animals join the first two protagonists. It explores relationships and the importance of accepting others, even if they are different from us. Acceptance is a need for kids to learn from a very small age. The various animals seem to stand for us with our different ages, skin colors, sizes opinions, needs, hobbies… It is making an important point: that we can be as different as a kangaroo and a goat and be friends. These animals share a nice time but also help each other (offering a bandage to one of them when they are hurt for instance). This book perfectly epitomizes what open-mindedness, tolerance, respect, and mutual aid mean. It is a hymn to nature and the love of others too. This story is perfect to entertain very small children while sharing a message with them and helping them grow into selfless, fair, charitable human beings. What else could we hope for in a book? Thank you!
