J.T. Bishop brings us a prequel to her popular Detectives Daniels and Remalla series with A Hamburger Christmas. Simon and Gary are two young teenagers treading the fine line between freedom and incarceration. They’ve been breaking into houses and stealing presents from the wealthy, and up until now, they’ve been lucky enough not to get caught. On the other side of the law, we see a different side to the detectives, usually solving mysterious murders, as they take a break for the Christmas holidays. This Christmas is going to be a difficult one for Remalla. It’s the first one since his fiancée passed away. He tries to enjoy the solitude, house-sitting at his cousin Chico’s house, but in the morning he’s rudely greeted by the most unwanted guests – robbers. Soon Remalla is in a standoff for his life. Can he get out alive, and as a Christmas miracle, help the poor souls he encounters?
Just in time for Christmas, J.T. Bishop delivers a truly heartwarming crime story. It sounds a bit like an oxymoron, but it’s a compelling duo, just like Detectives Daniels and Remalla. I loved Bishop’s fast-paced novella and am going to binge-read the Detectives Daniels and Remalla series after seeing them in action. Bishop has a knack for character development, as in the end I was rooting for Simon and didn’t want to see him get hurt. A Hamburger Christmas is a must for anyone who loves crime or mystery novels but with a happy ending.
