AJ is a queer writer and dog dad. He grew up in a small, rural farming community an hour outside of Chicago. He exited the Midwest in 2012 with a trunkful of his belongings and has been living in Los Angeles ever since. As an author, his literary work has earned awards from Almond Press UK, and has been published in The Danse Macabre, in anthologies, and has also appeared in Under The Bed Magazine and Apex Magazine. As a screenwriter, his work has been an official selection for the Independent Horror Film Awards, Hollywood Screen Film Festival, Los Angeles Cinefest, and Los Angeles Horror Competition. He’s also written the narrative scripts for four video game projects produced by Oculus for the Oculus VR system.

A Giant Comes is a literary drama novel by A.J. Saxsma. A boy lives an impoverished life working as a courier, trying to pay rent and take care of his father, who is an unemployed drunk. Promised a hundred shillings for the delivery of a parcel, the boy sets off to complete the job when the recipient, an elderly man, refuses to accept the package. The boy insists that the old man accepts the delivery, only for him to tell a story about when the old man was a young lad himself. The story follows the old man as a young boy who was taken under the wing of a mysterious traveler. As the traveler brings the grim news of an oncoming giant to a village, the boy witnesses the lengths people will go to maintain the illusion of prosperity.
A thought-provoking tale that mirrors some real-world topics, A Giant Comes is a commentary on the social divide amongst the general populace in the face of adversity. Author A.J. Saxsma tackles some sensitive issues, such as immigration, capitalistic greed, the influence of the church, and disinformation that feel increasingly relevant in recent years. The narrative is evenly-paced, and Saxsma's scrumptious prose makes the pages fly by without a single hitch. The characters are more or less used as tools to drive the narrative forward and shed light on the underlying themes. This is a book that will appeal more to literary fiction lovers. Overall, I very much enjoyed it and will definitely recommend it to readers.
