In A Forgotten Past (The Sapeiro Chronicles, Book 1) by Tiffany Lafleur, Lily is a Beast Whisperer who lives peacefully with her adopted family in Basolt, one of the many settlements in Sapeiro. Seven years ago, she was found injured on the riverbank with no memories of her past. When she saves her neighbors from a bear attack by transferring her soul into the massive beast, she discovers that she's a Spirit Hopper-an ability that hasn't been seen for centuries. This discovery makes her a target as several powerful figures want to use her rare gift for themselves and set plans to capture her. Now a wanted person, Lily must carefully choose whom to trust, and figuring out her real identity will be the key to defeating her enemies.
A Forgotten Past has vast and impressive world-building that will delight fantasy fans; the geography, history, politics, and conflicts make a solid set-up for its concept and premise, particularly the Kerai which is the unique and different magic abilities possessed by Sapeireans. The Craigs, Ashensons, Vaksens, Stanimirs, and Rosewoods are the noble families who work together to protect the land from their enemy, the Rasara. However, greed and lust for power from within threatens to destabilize Sapeiro's governance. The cast is a mix of complex and intriguing characters starting with Lily of Basolt who's destined to be more than just the one who senses and communicates with animals. Queen Amana Vaksen - also known as Amana the Bright - is a Sapeiro regent whose power equals her ambitions. Her co-regent, King Lionel Stanimir, is a kind but ailing ruler who worries constantly about the people and the security of the land. I'm intrigued by Amana's son, Varos, whose true intention is vague, and I also gravitated toward Sakti Stanimir, a young but seasoned and confident soldier. Well-paced and engaging, Tiffany Lafleur's The Sapeiro Chronicles is off to a great start, offering a nail-biting, magic-filled fantasy adventure.
