A Democracy in Heaven by Jason Hill takes readers on an exploratory mission to the edge of the Milky Way, where four crewmembers of the research space vessel Obama I stumble upon an exoplanet teeming with life, orbiting a giant star named KW Sagittari. Upon further investigation, they realize that the planet Alcyone is inhabited solely by humanoids who are albinos. After two crewmembers capture an albino woman from Alcyone and attempt to assault her, pilot August Adam intervenes to stop them, and both die in this confrontation. Now Adam must put his trust in the alien albino woman to leave Alcyone and make his way back to Earth. But Adam quickly realizes that things are not what they seem, as the seemingly innocuous aliens have their own plans.
Crisp and concise, Jason Hill's narrative flows without a single hitch. A Democracy in Heaven is one of those books where protagonists find themselves mired in situations and events beyond their control and try to make their way out against overwhelming odds. If you're looking for a short and breezy read, this is an adventure you won't regret embarking on. The characters are primarily used as vehicles to drive the plot forward. August Adam is one of the more fleshed-out characters, and his relationship with Uma grounds the story and gives readers something to root for. The worldbuilding is minimalistic and directly adheres to the direction of the plot. All in all, an entertaining odyssey for sci-fi lovers.
