A Chronicle of Angels by Vincent Thomas Vok is an inspiring poem divided into sections: a poem about angels that presents an insightful allegory of spiritual and human encounters. The author writes about his experience with angels from human and spiritual perspectives. Some angels can become desperate, once in their glory and “twice in their Hell,” they have known the ways of heaven and mock the human journey. This collection of poems translates an experience between dream and wakefulness, an experience that puts the narrator between his place on this Earth and the sky, where he must learn to fly.
A Chronicle of Angels is filled with vivid imagery and religious symbolism. I particularly enjoyed the sections where the intercourse between humans and angels is experienced as an act of love. Here, the angel takes the place of a lover in an allegory that is open to multiple interpretations. Vincent Thomas Vok addresses his angel, whose beauty amazes him, whose sadness breaks his heart, whose hiding soul reminds him of how some lovers leave each other. Then suddenly, the poet makes a startling revelation: “Don’t count on me for answers /Don’t question what I do / I do it for the Angels / I’ll do it now for you.” A Chronicle of Angels is a powerful tribute to angels, a book with strong religious allusions and captivating themes. The rhythmic nature of the poetic utterances grabbed my attention and pulled me into a journey that explores the nature of angels and how they connect to human reality. The tone is light, the voice compelling, and the diction exceptionally accomplished.
