After reading another book by Giacomo Giammatteo, I decided that I should also try A Bullet For Carlos - A Connie Gianelli Mystery. I was not disappointed! In this novel, the reader is introduced to Connie, short for Concetta, a police woman with quite a different background than many others. That background, i.e. being connected to some shady characters, is also what gets her in trouble. A drug bust goes bad, two of her fellow officers die, and she is suspected of being a dirty cop. Until the problem is solved, Connie is not suspended but gets to work for homicide and the case she picks leads her to Houston. She not only wants to solve the actual homicide case, but also clear her name. Both are not easy and turn her into a target herself.
It only took me two days to get through A Bullet for Carlos. It was too good to put down for more than just a few hours. Even though I have to admit that I like the main character of his other book, Gino, a bit better, I also warmed up to Connie. Some of the characters will also be familiar to readers of Giacomo Giammatteo's other novels. And it's always nice to meet familiar characters again and learn more about them.
The writing is very well done and puts you right into the story. I had no problem at all with imagining all the different places and how the characters acted. The only issue I had with the book was that I could guess to early who the actual killer was - but I still enjoyed reading how the various problems in the book would be solved. It was simply another very enjoyable read by an author who now has my attention!
