Young people love reading and watching movies about superheroes. They even play-act and dress up as their favorite hero. There are many superhero games available – both high tech and the old-fashioned board game. But real superhero fun comes from creativity that makes use of the mind and the imagination. The power to build one’s own set of superheroes and create believable (and unbelievable) combat scenarios is, in itself, awesome and a lot of fun.
James Manning has developed a wonderful book to help young people make their own superheroes and play around with their own imaginations, creating a game with 3-D characters and exciting scenarios. Manning's 3-D Craft Ideas (Block Heads – The origin of Hoshiko) is a Block Heads papercraft book for kids, including seven specially selected 3-D Block Head characters and one hoverboard. Each character is introduced with his historical background. There’s a nano-robot induced superpower Block Head, a vampire and others, some good and some bad. The stories of each character are interesting in themselves.
The templates for the characters are fascinating. Detailed instructions are provided on how to print out the templates and construct each Block Head and how to initiate the game. The young reader/player is encouraged to expand beyond the original game and create new rules and scenarios, in effect, creating their own game. This is a wonderful interactive project to encourage young people to utilize their creative powers, while at the same time enjoying what they like best: superheroes. Much better than high tech games.
