This is a review of the audio version of "172 Hours on the Moon" by Johan Harstad, narrated by Casey Holloway. The title itself grabbed my attention. I could hardly wait to listen to this book. Casey Holloway did a superb job reading this book. Her voice had just the right inflection. The plot sounded like a real thriller. NASA has decided to send three teens to the moon. Mia, Midori and Antoine are the “winners” of the lottery. We are introduced to each teen and their reason for entering the lottery. Antoine wants to go in the hope of impressing a girl. Mia had no interest in going to the moon; her parents enter her believing it is in her best interest. Midori sees this as an opportunity to move to New York where she will achieve fame and fortune. NASA neglects to tell the teens, their families or the public the reason why they stopped going to the moon. NASA sees this as a good way to boost public opinion and funding.
Johan Harstad is a talented writer. "172 Hours on the Moon" has a good solid plot. Parts of it seemed a little far out but that is true with most Science Fiction novels. Harstad did not rush in introducing the characters to readers. He allowed them to slowly develop allowing readers time to truly get a feel of their personality. I was shocked that Midori’s parents entered her in the lottery without discussing it with her. They were determined she would go despite the fact that she showed no interest and did not want to go. As I stated earlier, this is science fiction and we do have to expect a few mind-bending details. Harstad kept the suspense building so that I was on the edge of my chair throughout the last half of the book. The ending is a real surprise; I did not see it coming. All in all, this is a must read or listen to book. I believe it will be made into a movie.
