TV reality shows are popular with viewers, causing producers and networks to search for bigger and better ideas. Viewers have watched contestants sing, dance, juggle chain saws, pierce their skin and eat worms. The contestants are lured in by the smell of a cash award and notoriety. Everyone wants their 15 seconds of fame.
In 13 Days we meet a group of 16 young adults, contestants on a new TV reality show. Each contestant has their own hidden agenda. The contest takes place in an asylum rumored to be haunted. Each day one contestant disappears, taken by a misty white fog. They hear a young girl’s voice but see no one. Something scratches at their doors. What brings the most danger, their greed or the unknown factor?
13 Days: The Dark Circle by K. Lippi is a mixture of horror, thriller and adventure. This is not a book for the faint of heart. The author has aptly managed to create a sense of macabre. The tension builds as each day passes. There are numerous unexpected twists and turns that kept me eagerly turning the pages.
The beginning of the book has a list of characters along with a short biography of each one. There are a lot of characters to keep up with. I found myself continually referring to the list. Lippi is a master at characterization. She managed to breathe life into each character demonstrating their true personality and hidden agenda. The narrative moves back and forth from character to character.
I found one or two editing errors but on the whole it is well edited. The cover hints at what lies inside but is not eye catching. I would recommend something more dramatic to capture the attention of the book browser. All in all this is a very good read. Fans of fantasy and the occult will enjoy it.
