Find a Character's Perfect Home with Real Estate Listings
Where a character lives, visits, or, in the case of horror, gets roped into, is a reflection of who they are, or who they hope to be. I'll be the first to admit that details on architecture don't exactly flow from my imagination. One of the best-kept secrets for designing homes that perfectly suit a character? Real estate listings. These platforms offer not only visual prompts and descriptive inspiration but also the materials and styles that adorn every corner, making them a treasure trove for writers.
Real Estate Listings as Idea Prompts:
Browsing homes for sale online can spark endless ideas. Listings often provide a detailed breakdown of a property, from basic square footage to quirky features like a Victorian toilet with exposed plumbing or a pantry hidden behind a standard cupboard door. I've also stumbled across unfamiliar terms—like the house that had a second “dirty kitchen” and the bridge like “catwalk balcony” that connected two roof terraces. The beauty of real estate listings lies in their specificity. They allow writers to move beyond vague descriptions of “a cozy cottage” or “an opulent mansion” into fully realized spaces with real-world features. Whether it's a mid-century modern bungalow or a Tudor-style home steeped in history, listings present a wealth of ready-made settings to build on.
Visualization Through Staged Spaces:
Many listings include staged homes, complete with furniture and décor. Writers can easily imagine characters moving through these spaces—sinking into a leather Chesterfield armchair, leaning on a marble kitchen island, or gazing out at a lake view from a casement window. A minimalist loft with sleek lines might suit a tech-savvy loner, while a sprawling ranch with barns and paddocks could house a family with generational ties to the land.
Unique Features in Vacation Rentals:
Holiday rental properties are also great for inspiration. These spaces are often more eclectic than traditional homes for sale, showing potential vacationers everything from A-frame cabins nestled in the woods to coastal retreats with floor-to-ceiling windows. These rentals frequently include features that could double as plot devices: fire pits for late-night confessions, spiral staircases leading to secret lofts, or outdoor showers perfect for an impromptu meet-cute. Because they cater to travelers, they usually also highlight local flavor. How close is it to the shoreline? What type of tree is that rope swing hanging from? All of this gives writers a sense of how the home fits into its broader setting—a detail that enriches world-building.
From Listings to Literature:
For writers, real estate listings offer more than just floor plans—they provide texture, context, and an inspirational atmosphere. They make it easy to describe a house in precise, engaging detail, even when we don’t know what a “clerestory window” or “wainscoting” is off the top of our heads.
So the next time you need a setting that sings with authenticity, open up a real estate app or browse holiday rentals. Your characters and their spaces will be the better for it—and your readers will thank you for it.
