Victory Blvd. is a ‘vigilante’ story following along a well worn path of this genre – on a spectrum from the Lone Ranger to the Death Wish movies. Sameer Ketkar’s heroine, Callie Monroe, sits somewhere between the two. Her day job is as a stunt woman and the body double of a Hollywood superstar. Some time previously, her mother was murdered and this drove her to use her skills in a different direction. In her persona of ‘The San Fernando Valley Vigilante’ and dressed in black, with all sorts of gadgets and martial arts skills, she kicks, punches and shoots her way through the city’s underworld, ‘persuading’ evildoers to hand themselves over to justice. Her main accomplices in this are her best pal and personal assistant, Aryana Kobault, and Callie’s professional criminal grandfather, Hank Dempsey, but there is at least one major fly in her ointment - the intervening generation, her father, Assistant District Attorney Nathan Monroe. As well as this, the Burbank police would be annoyed at her antics but the fact that she constantly Tweets about her exploits, sometimes even in advance, is really stirring their ire. They set their best prosecutor, her own father, on her case and he soon discovers her secret. Will he put a stop to her games? Even have her jailed.
Sameer Ketkar has crafted a winner with Callie Monroe – the ultimate women’s libber. Victory Blvd. is, at fewer than 90 pages, a short book but it’s humorous, quirky and great fun to read. It's fast paced with plenty of well written action. Yes, some of the characters are ‘straight out of Central Casting’ and a few more pages would have allowed Sameer to develop them – and the plot - a bit more. I suspect that this just a pilot for bigger and even better things to come. I can’t wait.
