Unbullied by Alexa and Angel Dumas is a story about a fourteen-year-old’s internal struggle with the loss of her father, Rahul, living in a disconnected family, and moving to the city of Coquitlam due to her mother’s new job, which seemed like a foreign society in comparison to the life Kylee left behind in London. When she started her new school, the only things that settled her anxiety were the words of her mother and pleasant thoughts of Noah, her best friend from London. As school commences, Kylee runs into the clutches of three bullies who sense her vulnerability. Surprisingly, a classmate unexpectedly comes to her rescue. From there, Ethan and Kylee develop a friendship. To her surprise, the bullying didn’t cease but carried on for weeks into months.
It is a well-written story, immersed in descriptive and real dialogue. The authors' usage of internal dialogue allows you to get inside the head of the main character, Kylee. I loved the way the authors played the relationship between Kylee and her mother. You could see the seesaw of emotions going back and forth — a stubborn teenager and a loving, supportive parent. Many times people go through various types of bullying. In this story, Alexa and Angel Dumas demonstrate one of the most common forms of bullying in society, and they subliminally offer ways to escape the grasp of bullies.
