Tyler Goes to the Olympics: Book 1 in the Adventures of Tyler the Turtle Book Series, by Tommy Arthur, is an illustrated children’s story about Tyler Turtle, who was always picked to be the last one for games with his friends. When his mother inspires him to control his own destiny, he sets out to make up a competition with friends and relatives. I found the illustrations to be simple and bright, color-filled and attractive with each page I turned. The story has a positive slant while the young reader learns a little bit about the world of turtles. The most impressive thing about the book is its interactive nature. The reader learns the skills of each turtle and then chooses the one who races against Tyler’s team. This is done with a scanner app (on your phone, iPad, etc.) and connection to the internet. The selection brings up a web page and tells the reader the results of that particular race.
There are four events where the reader makes a selection to determine the results of the race. I like the way the book and more advanced technology come together to teach a child critical thinking skills. And of course, the reader can go back and make different choices as often as desired. Tyler Goes to the Olympics: Book 1 in the Adventures of Tyler the Turtle Book Series, by Tommy Arthur, is a fun book for children and comes highly recommended.
