The Passing of Brahm McFee by E.V. Dawson is the story of an aspiring prospector named Brahm McFee, who is traveling north from Mississippi to seek his fortune in the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s. He is joined by our narrator, who tells us of the perils of the Chilkoot Trail with its harsh weather in freezing temperatures and treacherous terrain. When an avalanche breaks just below the summit, the two men are buried under the snow and one man’s journey comes to a solemn end.

A tale of triumph and human struggle, young readers interested in the Klondike Gold Rush and other similar events will surely find The Passing of Brahm McFee to be just the adventure they were looking for. I read this story with my niece, and the two of us were completely invested from beginning to end, not wanting to put the book down until we reached the last page and heard the heartfelt words of Brahm McFee, who reminds us that our homes and our families are some of the most important things in life.

The story is written in sets of rhyming couplets which prevents readers from being overwhelmed by an influx of information. In addition, the rhyming nature of the story allows younger readers to easily slip into the natural rhythm of storytelling, and older readers will enjoy reading familiar words or perhaps even learn some new ones along the way. Last but not least, the beautiful illustrations by Dawson will be sure to captivate even the youngest of readers and inspire them to keep learning more about the story.
