Sidney by G. Gilman Wheeler is a cute little story for children about a snail. Sidney the snail is having a bad day and believes that no one loves him after being yelled at and getting into arguments with all his friends and family. He goes on to find out that everyone really does care about him in spite of the disagreements.

I chose Sidney because my 3-year-old daughter loves animals and I want her to be exposed to more creatures than just dogs and cats. I believe Sidney has a good message. Just because you have an argument with your friends or a family member does not mean you have to stop being friends. It also means that they will not stop caring about you. I read this book with my daughter and she liked it. It is an easy read and she was able to read most of the words herself. She enjoyed the artwork, especially the love sticker on Sidney’s shell. It also helps that the artwork is so colorful.

Sidney is a good book but I do wish that all the animals apologized to each other after all the incidents. After everything happened, nothing else was mentioned about the disagreements. Children need to learn how to work problems out, not forget about them. I think the funniest part of the story was when Wally the owl called Sidney “es-car-got”. My child is still too young to understand what it meant, but I thought it was funny.
