Randy Bamboo in Chicken City by RC Beaird is the story of a city boy gone country. When Randy's family decided to change their lives by moving to the countryside, Randy was excited. How could he resist the promise of rearing his own chickens? This hope of getting eggs from his own birds got him super eager to start life in his new home. So off the family went to the country to start their new life. What followed was the most exciting time of Randy's life as he raised his babies into grown chickens while protecting them from the ever so eager predators.

Randy Bamboo in Chicken City by RC Beaird is a brilliant, well-balanced mix of pictures and words; the story is part words/part pictures and all so well blended. The story comes alive right before your eyes through colourful illustrations popping off every page, making it all the more vivid. Amy Koch Johnson did an amazing job with the illustrations to match the flawless writing. It is amazing how RC Beaird used such few words to deliver a very compelling children's story. Randy's amazing transformation from city boy to country boy is testimony to RC Beaird's incredible character development. Randy's excitement radiates right off the pages; you can feel it as you read. The story about Randy and his chickens would be a worthwhile read for kids. They will have so much fun learning about rearing chickens. Everything about this book is so fitting for the intended audience. Kids will love this book and it will definitely capture and keep their attention.

Randy Bamboo in Chicken City is a children's animal book written by R.C. Beaird and illustrated by Amy Koch Johnson. Randy and his family are moving to the country, and his father has suggested that Randy raise chickens out there. Randy gets more and more excited at the prospect as they make the move to their new house. Once they've settled in, Randy and his dad go to the feed and grain store, and they pick out 24 tiny chicks. Randy sets up a temporary home for them in the garage and is amazed at the amount of care that goes into raising two dozen chicks. He's got to keep their newspaper clean of droppings, feed them, and make sure they have access to fresh water. Once they're old enough, Randy introduces them to the coop that he and his father have built for them. It's a lot easier caring for his flock now that they're out of the garage, but there are still things to watch for, especially the local coyotes who love to eat chickens.

R.C. Beaird's children's animal story, Randy Bamboo in Chicken City, is an entertaining and educational story that follows Randy's family as they move out to the country. The author's descriptions of Randy's experiences with his new flock of chickens make the story work beautifully. Amy Koch Johnson's illustrations are masterful. They're boldly colored and each panel has the depth and style of a frameable work of art. This book teaches kids about raising chickens, but it also highlights how caring for animals is a responsibility. My favorite segment of this story has to be when Randy's father tackles the coyote that ate one of Randy's chickens. The panel and storyline for that episode are marvelous. Randy Bamboo in Chicken City is highly recommended.
