Pretty in Black is the first book in a YA Gothic Romance series by Rae Hachton. Ellie considers herself an outsider and becomes even more so after the horrific murder of her sister. Depressed and suicidal, she attempts to take her own life in a cemetery, only to be saved by a mysterious boy named Marcus Marble. Almost immediately enthralled by each other, their love seems destined for tragedy as she soon discovers that she has the ability to hunt down Evermores while he is a powerful Evermore destined to spend eternity alone if he is unable to find his one true love. Stolen moments are all they have as they meet in cemeteries to discuss Poe and muse over opera, but as the danger increases they soon wonder if their tragic end is coming faster than they had expected.
Pretty in Black by Rae Hachton was an interesting read and very fast paced. It's told from two points of view though Marcus' doesn't start until more than halfway through the book. Ellie and Marcus' romance is sweet and is the predominant focus in Pretty in Black, so much so that other aspects seem to fall by the wayside or are only vaguely described. Ellie's ability as a huntress, her discovery of this skill, and the purpose of the group she was a part of left me confused and wondering if it was merely a plot device to add drama. But other than that, I really liked Hachton's inspiration for Pretty in Black and hope Ellie and Marcus are able to divert the tragedy of their romance.
