“Humanity was delicious. I mean, they were drool inducing, stomach growling, and lip smacking good. Some days, I almost wish I hadn’t eaten the last one.” Humanity Was Delicious by Ubiquitous Bubba is set in a dystopian future, where humans and animals no longer exist and cities are left in ruins. The only civilized beings left (if you can call them that) are the starving were-folks. The story opens with Loner the werewolf, a were’squito (mosquito) named Karl, and Jane the werecougar. The three of them are in their human form, sipping coffee and tea at Loner’s porch. Loner is public enemy number one since he ate the last human. To survive, the were-folks eat each other, but were-creatures aren’t delicious at all. Then there’s the alien Meeps, who abduct one or two were-creatures now and then using their spaceship. Unfortunately, the Meeps decide to abduct all of them during the were-folks’ public gathering.
On the whole, Humanity Was Delicious was unexpectedly imaginative and is a cheeky thrill ride that refuses to play by the conventional rules of the supernatural and sci-fi genre. I enjoyed it and read the book twice. Ubiquitous Bubba comes up with an ingenious premise and plot that would surprise and delight readers. It’s fast paced, has witty dialogue and well fleshed out characters. I really like the plucky Loner, and the comical Karl adds more fun to the story. I look forward to reading more of Bubba’s works, and hopefully they are as unique, wacky and funny as this one.
