Death is a subject many people rarely want to think about. Many spend their entire lives working at finding immortality and freedom from death, yet no one has so far managed it. In After Life: True Tales of the Restless Dead, we get a glimpse into the possibilities that the dead offer. Do you want to be cremated when you die? Shot into space? Turned into a gem? There are so many options and J. Penaud goes into detail on all of them, providing an insightful, if not mildly terrifying look into what is in store for everyone when their soul heads off to meet their maker.
Morbidly educational is a good phrase to describe After Life: True Tales of the Restless Dead. J. Penaud not only details the happenings of the dead and gives us some pretty wild stories about what happens post-mortem, he also is quite scientific in his presentation. Definitions and vivid descriptions of what happens to a body when the human has died were simultaneously informative and gruesome, but they were very fascinating to me. I liked that Penaud gave the background scientific information about death and burial before the subject of the supernatural was broached. This choice made the fantastic and somewhat unbelievable stories of later chapters more grounded and reasonable. I also appreciated the historical input, which was cool to follow the path of discovery and myth regarding death and burial throughout the ages. I felt like I got a mini history lesson with each chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any who feel like braving the fearful subject of death and the afterlife.
