Everywhere we go there are mirrors reflecting our image. Most of us avoid mirrors or only briefly glance into one as we brush our hair. Rarely do we study our own reflection. Perhaps we are afraid of what we may see. In A Conspiracy of Mirrors by David McLeod, the author suggests that "when we are uncomfortable with someone, it is because we see a part of ourselves in that person." We must learn to accept ourselves for who we are; we are reflections of those around us. Perhaps, we should be careful of whom we reflect.
The author expresses his sentiments through his poetry. "begins a life" celebrates the beginning of life, an unborn child floating, safe, warm, listening to his mother's heartbeat, content inside his mother's womb. Then comes the squeezing and shock of birth. Nothing will ever be the same. "sleepwalkers" reminds readers to slow down, watch and listen. We are sleepwalking through life unaware of the beauty around us. "chameleon" shows how like a chameleon we attempt to blend into the background. We want to remain invisible. McLeod brings out the emotions of his readers. He manages to express those emotions in a manner few can mimic.
Conspiracy of Mirrors was illustrated by Patrick Coyne and Paola Sabella. They creatively illustrated the theme of the poems. McLeod creatively expresses himself through words. Combined with the illustrations, his words will touch the hearts of readers. I look forward to reading more of David McLeod’s art.
